Disney’s designer collaborations

Disney’s designer collaborations

A look inside Disney's Lifestyle show at Somerset House

Everyone loves Disney, right? I mean, I’m in my 20’s and I’m still obsessed with Disney. I recently wrote about my trip to Disneyland Paris with Charlotte and Vogue (if you missed it you can read the post here), and we had the best weekend ever. Before going away, we spent a lot (and I mean A LOT) of time looking for Disney clothes to wear on our trip; we even called the Disney Store, and we were told they didn’t sell adult clothes. We managed to find a few pieces, beautiful jewellery from , and some kicks from the Vans Disney collaboration, but it seemed that adults were deprived of nice Disney clothes. When we were at Disneyland, our nostalgic love for Disney and the happy memories they evoked were ignited and we went to all of the shops both in the resort and just outside in the Disney Village, to try and find some nice clothes to take away with us. Although there were lots of ‘souvenir’ style merchandise for adults, we were uninspired by the offering as we wanted fashionable pieces we could wear day to day without looking like we were going to a fancy dress party. It therefore seemed like fate when I was invited to Disney’s annual lifestyle show at Somerset House as my prayers had been answered…

Thousands of industry professionals came to the show to witness Disney’s current and upcoming brand collaborations, but also to witness one-off designs and ideas; a very clever way for Disney to show-off what is can potentially do with brands.  As I walked through the multiple rooms marvelling at everything on display, I quickly realised that my prayers weren’t just answered, they were exceeded, and I really hope the brands were inspired as me so a lot of the things I saw come to life!

The first room I walked into was full of one of a kind pieces created for the show by Disney’s designers in order to showcase their talent. My absolute favourite outfit had to be a suit with a Mickey Mouse lining, which came with a matching bow-tie and umbrella.

Next, I walked into a room filled with an impressive collection of clothes designed for adults by Disney precisely because they realised there is huge demand for ‘nice’ clothes and they wanted to offer an affordable range. My personal highlights were this incredible Dory dress (from the upcoming film Finding Dory, which is the sequel to the much loved Finding Nemo), and the his and her Marvel bomber jackets. I mean, this is exactly what I was looking for at Disneyland! I asked how much the bombers retail for and I was told £35 - that’s so good no? Cheaper than they would be at Topshop!

Next I walked into the main space, and this the point where my mind was totally blown as it showcased a huge selection of Disney’s current and upcoming collaborations from the likes of Marc Jacobs, Anya Hindmarch, Valentino, Giuseppe Zanetti, Kenzo, and Reebok to name just a few. I honestly had no idea Disney had collaborated with so many brands, and I spent ages looking excitedly through their range and making a mental note of all the things I wanted in my wardrobe. There was so much to see I couldn’t show you everything so I included photos of some of my favourite pieces, although trust me it was hard to narrow these down! One stand-out collaboration were the Marvel shoes designed by Julian Hakes. Julian used to be an architect before turning his attention to shoe design, which I found so interesting as each shoe is like a piece of art.

Just as I thought my excitement levels couldn’t be topped I stepped into the final room, which was homeware. You don’t understand how much I love homeware, I mean I even get excited with your standard  Ikea furniture so imagine how excited I was to witness Disney homeware. One thing I didn’t realise it that Disney have their very own colour chart (like pantone), and they had created the most perfect collection of kitchenware in pretty pastels. You only have to look at my website to witness my love to pastel colours! Another highlight I had to show you was the pink sofa with wooden legs (I’m sure there’s a technical word for that type of sofa but I’m not clued up on the technical terms of furniture, sorry!). Finally they had collaborated with artists to create one-off paintings and furniture such as the insane Mickey Mouse chair!

If you look closely the chair even has a tail!

I can totally see a brand like Selfridges releasing the Disney homeware. So now I just have to keep my fingers crossed and wait. And I hope Disney bring out some adult stores soon so we can get our hands on it all really easily (nudge nudge wink wink).

The moment I got home I was straight on the internet to see which collaborations I could get my hands on, so I thought I’d share the pieces I was able to find (not very much of it sadly).

I’m sure this post doesn’t do the show as much justice as it deserves but I hope you still find it interesting, especially if, like me, you feel like you’ve been deprived of awesome Disney designs. Do you think you’d decorate your house with Disney, or is it a little too much? And let me know which is your favourite thing from the post! I’d say mine has to be the Julian Hakes shoes.

Speak to you soon,

with love from ashley black
