I think it’s easy to take London for granted, and get comfortable going to the same old places, so one of my New Year’s resolutions was to treat my hometown like a new-town (see what I did there?). When I first moved to London about 6 years ago I would walk around wide-eyed, and try out all the latest places and discover different areas, and I wanted to inject some of that passion back into my routine. I mean, we live in one of the greatest cities in the world! We have everything on our doorstep, and that’s definitely worth celebrating.
And Molly Bakes is literally on my doorstep, well down the road from it anyway. Boy oh boy is this place worth breaking the diet for (I don’t know why I felt the urge to write boy oh boy, as I would never say that ever in real life but I feel it conveys the necessary enthusiasm!). I arrived on a sunny Sunday afternoon and there was already a queue coming out of the door, it was the only place on the street with a queue! It meant waiting for about half an hour before it was our turn to taste their famous Freakshakes, but some things are worth waiting for and this was one of them.
A freakshake is an Australian food trend that is basically the most indulgent and incredible milkshake imaginable. I think when Kellis sang about that mysterious milkshake that all the boys to the yard, it was probably a freakshake. Molly Bakes has very quickly become famous for creating them, and after trying one I can safely say you need to try one!
They are available in four flavours, Chocolate, Raspberry, Caramel and Peanut Butter and created using fresh ice cream, cookies, brownies, marshmallows, honeycomb and sauces. Charlotte and I both went for the peanut butter one, and despite needing to sleep for the entire afternoon afterwards it was so worth it and I’m not ashamed to say we ate every last bite.
The cafe also serves cake and cupcakes - I thought a freakshake was quite enough for one visit so I can’t comment on how they taste but they looked incredible.
Are you tempted to try out a freakshake? Let me know what you think if you end up going along! And if you know any places in London I should try out then please leave your recommendations for me in the comments!
